I just saw Terminator.. here’s some thoughts.

Since i was a child, i’ve always been a big fan of the Terminator franchise.
I LOVED the original two films.. I must have seen them a million times each!

The third movie was a bit of a disappointment though… Having the Terminator wear those star shaped shades and use lines like “Talk to the Hand” made it seem like a bit of a cheap piss take of the classics that preceded it. - Not to mention, they killed off Sarah Connor, a fundamental ingredient in any good Terminator story.

So, I hadn’t really been too bothered about seeing Terminator Salvation. I knew it was not going to feature Schwarzenegger, and Sarah was long dead, AND it was to be set in 2018 - Post Judgment day. - the flashback scenes to post Judgment Day in all the other films just bored me, so the thought of seeing a whole film in that era didn’t really excite me.

But hey, it is still a Terminator film after all.. so i went.

It was much better than i was expecting. Bale played the role of John Connor very well. he was as deep and disturbed as he needed to be, and he looked the part too.

I didn’t really see the point to Kate Bruster being in it aside from the fact that she was there at the end of the last film. Her character was of no importance to the story, and the movie would have been no different had she not been in it at all.. However, she was heavily pregnant, which was not actually mentioned, Obviously to lay the foundation of John having a child in the next movie.

It was great to see Kyle Reese as a vulnerable teenaged boy, knowing what a bruised and battered soldier he will later become. And if nothing else, i think the whole point of this movie was to show Reese and Conner actually meeting. My only complaint was that they could probably have found someone who looks more like the Kyle Reese in the original 1984 film, like they did in the much missed “Sarah Connor Chronicles” TV show.

The lack of Schwarzenegger in the film was more than made up for in the scene where Connor is met with the first completed T-800 which looks exactly as we first see Arnold at the beginning of the first film, not the much older Arnold from the third film.
Apparently the role was played by an actor, but Schwarzenegger’s face was digitally applied…. Not a model of his current face though, it was a much younger face.. he looked JUST right. the effect was absolutely perfect and was the highlight of the film for me.

So anyway, i’ll definitely see it again, and if you are a fan of the Terminator franchise, or just love a film jam packed with awesome action, you should definitely catch it on the big screen.
